MSNBC, the online news source and joint Microsoft and National Broadcast Corporation collaboration, is considering a facelift as well as a name change. Confusion between online sources and the company’s current cable television network has executives considering a revamp that would further distinguish the company’s various distribution channels from one another.
The matter is complicated somewhat by perceived differences in the type and quality of news delivered via the online domain and its television counterpart. While the MSNBC website has achieved notoriety for its objective reporting, television broadcasts have been noted as having a more left-wing persuasion. The age of the domain, MSNBC having launched its website some 15 years ago, poses further problems for developers and executives alike.
New domain registration could damage brand recognition and decrease traffic if not executed properly.
Part of the problem is the high level of competition in the news industry, where FOX and CNN could poach current viewers because of short term web hosting and brand identity mix-ups.
